Muslims Preach a Message of Peace

| Wednesday, November 18, 2009
Tens of thousands of Muslims from around the world journeyed to an East Worldham farm last weekend for the annual Jalsa Salana gathering. The Ahmadiyya Muslim convention, which saw 40,650 Muslims from 85 countries pledge to stand firm against the threat of extremism, was a three day peace rally screened live around the world on TV from Oaklands Farm.

It marked the 100th anniversary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community – a branch of the faith distinct from other Muslims in that it believes the second coming of Christ was fulfilled in the person of Hadhrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, an Indian religious figure who lived from 1835 to 1908.

Ahmadiyya Muslims follow one worldwide spiritual leader, Hadhrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, who addressed the convention on four occasions.

He led the pledges for peaceful co-existence and non-violence.

Ahmadiyya Muslim spokesman Dr Basharat Nazir said: "Last year there was a heavy emphasis on peace and this year there was a continuation of this message.

"I think for the last three or four conferences the emphasis has really been on this message.

"What we are really trying to do is to address the rest of the Muslim community and work hard to counter a small element of extremists amongst them."

Last year's traffic chaos, caused by heavy rain, was not repeated and organisers were praised for their hard work in putting together a trouble free event.

East Hampshire's top policeman, chief inspector Phil Kedge said: "I would like to thank and congratulate the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association for its organization of what has been a very successful event.

"The extensive planning by the association, police and partners has resulted in minimal disruption to the roads network.

"We have received very positive feedback from the local residents of East Worldham and Kingsley and officers have enjoyed the festival atmosphere throughout the policing of the event over the three days.

"In terms of policing this has been an extremely successful convention."

President of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Association UK Rafiq Hayat, said: "We are grateful to the local authorities, services and residents for their support, cooperation and patience that have helped tremendously in making this Jalsa one of the most successful and memorable."
